The Last Set and the First Night
Of course I had to be at the opening of Lumina yesterday, but not before making a stop at Sunvana.
The reason was simple: the Amped Dance Crew was there for the second performance of their tour across the grid. Before they take the stage at SL23B, this was another chance to see new routines, fresh choreography, and precision that makes you wonder if they secretly replace their dancers with synchronized machinery between shows. I’m sharing a few photos here, but not too many. Leave something for yourself to discover. Their upcoming performances are on my list, and they should probably be on yours too.
After the show came a bittersweet afterparty.
Maya played her final set as a DJ at Sunvana’s pool, and while it was every bit as good as we’ve come to expect, every beat seemed to land a little harder than usual. We should see Maya one more time at the Friendship Valley Music Festival in August, but yesterday still felt like the end of an era. So we did what anyone would do. We got as little clothing involved as possible, drifted between the pool and the dancefloor, got into one and onto the other, as we did with eachother and celebrated Maya the best way we knew how.
Then it was time for Lumina.
The hype around the opening had been building for weeks as I told you yesterday, and the moment I stepped onto the dancefloor I knew it was right. Whenever I visit a new venue, the photographer part of my brain starts worrying. Which lens should I bring? Will I need filters? Did somebody remember that lighting is supposed to help photographs rather than actively fight them?
As it turns out, I had nothing to worry about. Looking through the memory card this morning confirmed it. The venue looked fantastic, the lighting was spot on, and everyone seemed brought their best look for opening night. The result was a camera full of photographs and a reminder that the easiest way to tell whether a club launch succeeded, is simply to look at the people dancing in it.
