Take Me to Your DJ

Leave it to my friend Xeno to find intelligent life.

Xeno, as those of you who have seen him may already have guessed, is an extraterrestrial.
He’s not from this place, but he belongs here.

I suspect that some time ago he picked up a sound being emitted from our planet and decided to come and investigate. I don’t know his species and his ears aren’t particularly big, but they are clearly highly developed. Xeno knows sound. And he enjoys it.

He has also developed quite an appreciation for some of the other things our planet has to offer. Mainly women. I’m still not entirely sure whether his species is capable of mind control or whether his success has more to do with the rather impressive out-of-this-world procreation device I have, on occasion, seen dangling around. Either way, the man enjoys himself. He appreciates the good things in life.

So when Xeno calls to tell me he’s detected a new club, built by Konrad Rune, who also happens to be playing some very good music there, I abandon my preparations for a night of jazz and blues and go investigate. You don't ignore an extraterrestrial intelligence report.

The place was, fittingly, called New Moon. I suspect the name alone may have been responsible for its initial appearance on Xeno’s radar, but whatever brought him there, the signal was worth following. New Moon is great.

Konrad is obviously a conscious builder with a plan. The dancefloor isn’t small, but the clever use of stairs and levels gently nudges everyone toward each other. It means that even when the place isn’t that busy yet, nobody feels lost in a huge empty room. Instead, it feels intimate.

That sounds obvious, but an alarming number of clubs seem to have been designed on the assumption that the primary purpose of a dancefloor is to demonstrate how much unused floor space you own. New Moon doesn't. Add the really great tunes Konrad was laying down and Xeno’s instruments once again appear to have been properly calibrated. Good space. Good people. Very good sound.

So there we were, an extraterrestrial and a woman who for a moment stepped away from planning an evening listening to jazz, standing on a New Moon listening to something different. Another confirmed sighting of intelligent life.

Apparently it’s out there after all.
