The First Comment

Roux was the first person to leave a comment on this site.

That was when the system was different, before I replaced it with something cleaner. So you'll have to trust me on this. But I keep track of these things. First comment, first like, first person to spell my name wrong in an email subject line. It all goes in the file.

So when her birthday party invite came through last week, I wasn't going to miss it. I brought my camera. Partly because I knew she'd want the photos later, partly because holding a camera gives you something to do with your hands. Walk into a room with mostly strangers and you can either stand there looking lost or you can frame a shot. I know which one I prefer.

The venue was warm in a specific way birthday parties get when everyone's arrived at once and no one's left yet. Roux looked like someone who'd forgotten it was her own party and kept being pleasantly surprised by the decorations. I took photos of her laughing with people whose names I didn't catch. Someone in a good jacket. Someone else in an even better one. A whole group gathered around what I assume was either a very good story or very bad cake.

Roux found me between shots and said thank you for coming, which is the kind of thing people say at their own parties when they actually mean it. I stayed long enough to get the good light and then I slipped out before anyone noticed I was leaving, which is always the goal.

You’ll always remember your first. Happy birthday, Roux.
