Bienvenido a Miami

It’s too obvious, but I’m easy like that.

Still, it’s not just the name of the club. I think it's that neon glow that makes me feel like I’ve walked straight into Miami. Vice does that to me. And yesterday it was literally the highlight of an evening that had started in a far more responsible manner.

I began at Sanctuary, listening to an amazing live violinist. Yes. Culture. You really should keep an eye on the amazing things Stevie brings there, because every now and then I find myself somewhere I might actually be able to tell my mother about.

From there I made an intermezzo at Satyr, where Nikki was doing one of her sets. Sometimes navigating everything you want to see and everyone you want to hear feels like planning a minor military operation and at times those can escalate quickly, but yesterday the pieces fell into place perfectly.

Sanctuary. Satyr. Home. Change clothes, again. Grab camera. VICE.

Because VICE always brings it. Not only in lighting, although God knows my camera appreciates the place, but also in its choice of DJs.

One of the reasons I wanted to be there was DJ Dena Dana. I’d been to her sets before, but it had been a while. Sometimes people simply fall off your radar for no apparent reason until somebody puts them right back in front of you.

Yesterday VICE did and within minutes I remembered why I loved her sets so much. They’re energetic, diverse and have the ability to keep pulling you along without telling you where you’re going next. And then there’s her delicious Cockney accent slipping in between the tunes. That does things to me.

She really is a great DJ and I need to make sure it doesn’t take this long before I hear her again.

Then there’s the other thing about VICE: the people it attracts. The place is art in itself. Creativity drips from the walls, blasts from the speakers and shines at you from practically every direction, so perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that some of the best people find their way inside.

Present company included. Obviously.

I spent a good part of the evening talking to people around me, meeting some gorgeous new ones (you know who you are), dancing, taking pictures and enjoying one of those nights where everything lands exactly where it should. And then Chili walked in. We very quickly returned to the subject of the foam party earlier this week and, when I mentioned that I had recently moved, she simply had to see my house.

Chili is inquisitive.

We have that in common.

What I hadn’t known was that we apparently share something else too: a history in other realms, many years ago. So later that night, somewhere in the park around my new home, Chili’s former fairy met my former lycan. Hers was apparently known for granting every wish. Mine was mostly known for humping people’s legs.

Whether either of them fell back into old habits yesterday is something I’m going to leave exactly where it belongs. In the realm of fantasy.

Enjoy.
