There Goes the Neighbourhood
There was hype building up.
As usual, it started with a rumour. Unconfirmed, as usual, but from a solid source, and then slowly it began to spread: The District, a part of NYC, was about to open its gates after a serious redevelopment project.
Now, none of us had ever heard of this particular part of the Big Apple, but apparently it had always been there. Funny how cities work.
The renovations were done by Megan, who owns one of the best construction companies around and recently worked on the park surrounding my new house. So I already knew this was going to be good. And it was. The place looks fantastic.
It also houses a number of brand stores selling stuff you and I like, because you and I look good. That's all I'm going to say about shopping, because this is not that sort of blog.
You probably already guessed why I was actually there. There was a party.
Right out in the street. No club, no bar, and I don't even think there was a toilet nearby. But we did what we always do: we managed. And really, I've done far worse things in public streets and dark corners, so who am I to suddenly start demanding facilities?
Riips was playing a great set, everyone looked good, the street filled up and before long The District felt a lot less like a freshly completed development and more like somewhere we'd all been misbehaving for years. You know what my world looks like by now.
I brought evidence.
The one slightly alarming development of the evening was the District mayor casually naming Markus as the local drug lord. Apparently the man had managed to establish his criminal empire before the neighbourhood was even properly finished. He's got balls, I'll give him that. I do wonder what percentage the mayor is getting, though. And, perhaps more importantly, whether his protection detail is prepared for Kiyori's inevitable vengeance. But those are concerns for another day.
My more immediate concern is that this turned into yet another one of those nights where I photographed practically everyone except myself.
Again.
I did take a picture later that night, on a beach. I wasn't wearing much, so perhaps that compensates somewhat.
You'll get that one later.
