Funky Little Thing
So, Tuesday wasn't quite over after my visit to Stigmata.
Now, if you've been anywhere near a club, you've probably come across Bubbles. Or Bubs. Little B. Or whatever other fuzzy nickname people have come up with for him. The man seems to have collected quite a few, and deservedly so. He's a cute little thing.
We recently exchanged numbers, and I've since discovered there's quite a bit of depth to the man. Pun very much intended and I can see the appeal.
Now, before anyone starts feeling sorry for him for being somewhat vertically challenged… Don't. I've checked his Primfeed, and let's just say he doesn't appear to suffer from the same limitations on the horizontal scale. And that's all I'm going to say about that. For now.
No, what I really want to talk about are the man's tunes. His funky tunes, to be precise.
Because just as I was beginning to think it might be time to leave Stigmata and see what else the evening had to offer, a message came in. Bubs was playing. Perfect timing and at Chaos & Calm, no less!
Now, I have a soft spot for that place. I spent quite a bit of time there when I returned to this part of the world last year, and I have some very fond memories of those nights. I haven't been around nearly as much since the place came under new management, but that's entirely on me, not them. There are only so many places I can grace with my presence in a week, and believe me, I do try.
So off I went. And there he was. Bubs, up on that rooftop I remembered so well.
Funny thing, though. I could have sworn the rooftop was smaller. Perhaps my memory was playing tricks on me, or perhaps having Bubs standing on it somehow made the whole place look a lot larger. Perspective is a fascinating thing, isn't it?
Anyway, what I certainly don't remember from my earlier visits was hearing funk quite like this, because Bubs was absolutely on fire. He laid down a fabulous set, full of those irresistible grooves that make it impossible for me to stand still. And he did it with such apparent ease, moving from one track to the next as if he'd been born doing it.
I already liked the man, but my appreciation for him grew considerably that evening and I'm talking about his musical talents. Mostly.
You see, I really enjoy the right music at the right moment in the right place. It's something you can't always plan for. Sometimes everything just falls into place, and suddenly an evening that was already pretty good becomes special, which was what happened on that rooftop. The music was perfect, the atmosphere matched it and the people I shared it with made it even better.
I know I say this quite often, but I do seem to have a remarkable talent for finding myself surrounded by beautiful people. Perhaps they gravitate towards me. Perhaps I gravitate towards them. Either way, it works rather well.
So there we were, high above the ground, enjoying some fabulous funk with a rather fabulous little man behind the decks. And I couldn't have asked for a better way to end my Tuesday.
Well, I could.
But that's a different story.
