Going Down
Knowing which invitation to accept is a skill. Even more so when it comes from a place that’s not somewhere you go regularly. It's exciting, but it comes with a bit of risk. I've accidentally walked into venues with line dancing. I've found myself at clubs catering to... let's call them specialized interests. Interests I might even have appreciated, had I understood what on earth was happening.
Fortunately, I told you recently that the people in charge of my social calendar have been thoroughly reshuffled after a string of embarrassing logistical failures. This time they pointed me toward Hi Life. A solid recommendation.
Actually, that's selling it short. Hi Life isn't a safe bet. It's loud. It's hard. It's deep. Quite literally, too. The dancefloor is built on a slope, which seems like a somewhat weird architectural decision in a place where alcohol, unholy substances and attractive strangers conspire against your sense of balance. Once gravity joins the party, getting back up the hill feels like a challenge. Not that you'd want to leave anyway.
Naturally, I brought my camera. Experience has taught me that photographs are considerably more reliable than my memory when reconstructing the previous evening. My brain has a habit of calling in sick after a good night out.
One thing I do remember is the lighting. Whoever designed it deserves a compliment. Proper strobes, sweeping beams, plenty of atmosphere. Exactly the kind of setup that makes a club feel alive. My camera, however, had... opinions.
Strobe lights and camera shutters aren't always the best of friends. Half the shots caught the lights blazing. The other half captured the split second in between, when everything disappeared into darkness. Somewhere out there is an alternate gallery with twice as many photos, hidden in the tiny fractions of seconds my camera decided didn't exist.
Maybe next time I'll convince it to cooperate.
Until then, these are the moments it did manage to catch.
