Pool Standards

This summer never ends. Every time I think I catch a whiff of cold air or feel the first drop of rain, it turns out to be air conditioning or... well, something else hitting my skin. And from what I can tell, everyone is aching for some relief.

Which is probably why I feel like I know most of you by your wrinkles, moles and plastic surgery scars by now. Half the week, I meet you in pools.

And since you know how highly I value hygiene, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep stepping into some of those same pools. I mean, I remember what I did in there last time. If the rest of you have been doing anything similar, I'm starting to worry about the actual ratio of water still floating around in there.

What exactly are we getting ourselves into by now?

So when Sunvana returned with a splash, I was relieved to discover they'd done so with a brand new, pristine pool. Fresh water. Untouched. Innocent.

For about three minutes, probably.

I slid in with a smile, something I'm usually more accustomed to seeing other people do, and waded through bodies I knew and a refreshing number I didn't. That's always promising. Familiar faces are lovely, obviously, but unfamiliar bodies come with possibilities. I was hoping there'd be at least a couple I'd have inspected a little more thoroughly by the end of the night.

Before it came to that, I got myself in the mood with Jin. We danced to Lili's tunes while doing what people do at pool parties: pretending to listen to the music while shamelessly checking out everyone around us.

Now, I'm mostly a visual person. Put something attractive in front of me and I can usually find something interesting to focus on. Jin, however, has a talent for the stories behind the people. I have absolutely no idea how she does it. It's as if she opens a page on someone and simply starts reading.

And she reads everything.

"The couple over there... see him with his member hanging out? They really found each other. No limits, apart from him not wanting to deal with crabs."

I mean, that's not information I'd normally have about people I've only just spotted across a swimming pool, but useful nonetheless. Suddenly people aren't just attractive strangers anymore. They're attractive strangers with backstories, preferences and apparently very specific policies regarding crustaceans.

Everyone should have a Jin at parties.

So by the end of the night, Jin and I had thoroughly discussed everything that required further investigation and eventually floated our separate ways. I don't know who or what she did after that, and I respect that mystery.

But when I see her again, I'll make sure to tell her the underwater rugby team appears to be free of crabs.

I checked this morning.
