She Had a Camera
This post isn't about this, but I never knew my mother.
There's a whole story there, but let's just say my appreciation for some of the finer things in life, such as stimulants and sex, apparently doesn't come from a stranger. Sometimes that combination has unexpected consequences.
I'm one of them.
I've heard stories about her, though. She was beautiful. Some even say I'm her spitting image. If she was beautiful, she had to be. Obviously.
She was also a photographer. So much for nature versus nurture, I guess.
Recently, I got hold of some of my mother's personal belongings. Among them was a small box of old photographs, taken many years ago at Sanctuary.
You might know the place. It's been around for a long time, built around music, art and friendship. Back then they used to organize a festival called Field of Peace. Like so many gatherings of its time, it was meant to bring people together, enjoy music and each other, and perhaps create a little peace in a world that wasn't always particularly good at it.
It was strange flipping through those photographs.
The vintage colours. The grain. Little scratches and imperfections from years of being handled and stored away. People sitting in the grass, dancing, talking, laughing, just being together.
And somehow they felt familiar.
It felt as though I could have taken them myself. As though I had been there, wandering around that field with a camera, watching people enjoy themselves and occasionally forgetting they were being photographed.
I love that about photographs. Give them enough time and they stop merely showing you what happened. Somehow they make you feel like you remember it.
Even when you weren't there.
Anyway, I thought I'd share this little piece of history with you. Have a look through the photographs. Maybe you'll even recognize someone from back then. If you do, let me know.
