Mr. Biler, I Presume?

It's good to see how things can reset themselves.

When the whole world seems to have gone crazy, when everything around you feels dark and chaotic, and you're struggling to keep your mind from imploding, it's reassuring to know that, together, we can still find a way to make things right again. Which we did this week when things seemed to return to normal again.

So after almost a month of the most horrifically beautiful chaos, spectacular outfits, blood, bruises, graveyards and people looking like they'd recently been dug up, I was rather pleased when Tamsyn handed me an invitation to a birthday party.

Erol's birthday party, to be precise. Or Mr. Biler, as many people call him.

I've known Erol for quite a while. If you spend as much time moving between clubs and parties as I do, you're bound to run into him sooner or later. But it's only recently that I've had the pleasure of getting to know him a little better. And I like him.

He's friendly, smart and opinionated. My type of guy, really. Although I suppose most of you have opinions, so perhaps what I actually appreciate is that his tend to align with mine. Which, as we all know, is generally a sign of excellent judgement.

There's just one thing I haven't quite figured out. Do I call him Erol? Or Mr. Biler? For some reason, I haven't dared to ask. I know, it's ridiculous. I've asked people far more intimate questions within minutes of meeting them, but apparently this one has me completely defeated. So when I arrived at his party yesterday, I did the only sensible thing. I lingered for a moment, waited for someone else to greet him, listened carefully, and followed their lead.

Happy birthday, Erol!

See? Socially flawless. Nobody suspected a thing.

The venue for the evening was the Harbor Club at La Chateau, a place I really should visit much more often. It's stylish, beautiful, classy and looks expensive. So, naturally, I felt right at home. And it was nice to see an actual harbor for a change. I usually arrive at the yachts I visit by helicopter. It's simply more convenient, and you avoid all that tiresome business of finding a place to park, walking along a pier and pretending to know which boat belongs to whom.

Although, after my recent experiences with aviation, perhaps I should reconsider that habit. Still, I understand not everyone gets to enjoy life at my level, and it's important to appreciate the little things. Like arriving at a harbor the traditional way, without a pilot, a landing pad or an emergency services response.

What was very much on my level, however, was the company. Erol has surrounded himself with an absolutely gorgeous collection of friends. Beautiful people, fabulous outfits, wonderful conversations and that atmosphere you get when everyone is just happy to be there. I could immediately see why I'd been added to the guest list. In fact, everyone looked so good that there was hardly any need for my presence to elevate the gathering to its usual standard.

Well, perhaps a little.

I mean, I am still Doreen.

It really was a lovely occasion. No horror, no blood, no impending apocalypse. Just good people coming together to celebrate someone they clearly care about. After all the glorious madness of Halloween, I hadn't realised how much I'd enjoy that.

So thank you, Erol, for inviting me, and happy birthday once again. It was wonderful to spend the evening with you and your friends. And to everyone else, here are some photographs from the celebration.

Oh, and Erol?

If you're reading this, perhaps you could settle something for me… Mr. Biler or Erol? Because I'm perfectly comfortable asking someone to take their clothes off, but for some reason, asking what to call you has become a bit of a problem.
